For multilingual professionals and scientists

Complex ideas,clear in English.

Your team understands English, but struggles to communicate their thinking in presentations and high-pressure conversations. I help them speak with clarity and presence, so their English reflects the expertise they already have.

Spoken English training for multilingual professionals and scientists

My background in science and philosophy helps me understand the thinking behind what your team is trying to say.

We work on the English without losing the scientific or intellectual substance of their work.

And I don't treat your team as deficient or ask them to imitate native speakers.

I want their English to show what they already know and who they are.

You usually notice the problem when they have less time to think

  • In meetings, they have good ideas but take too long to organise their thoughts into a clear response in English.
  • They can explain the work to other researchers or engineers, but find it harder to explain it clearly to a non-technical audience.
  • They can give a prepared presentation. But when the questions get difficult, they get nervous and struggle to find the English they normally have.

I help your team to handle these situations more easily

  1. Get to the point more quickly

Organise the answer while they're speaking, then make the main point clear.

  2. Make scientific and other complex ideas easier to follow

Explain the work to people outside their field using the science communication principles I teach top university students.

  3. Stay calm when they have to answer on the spot

Practise answering unexpected questions under the kinds of pressure that make it harder to think and find the words.

About this rating

This rating combines learner evaluations from feedback forms, standardised to a five-point scale. Learners were asked questions such as ‘Overall, how would you rate Irwan Hanish as a trainer/coach/teacher?’ and ‘How likely are you to recommend Irwan Hanish to others?’, and to rate statements such as Irwan Hanish ‘clearly explains the teaching content’ and ‘is competent in the subject matter taught.’ The rating reflects the high-quality learning experience that your team will get.

'Before this, I can't imagine a structure or method in communicating that I can follow step by step, Dr Irwan [has made] this clear for me, and his examples are replicable. I recommend this to everyone interested in Science Communication.'

Maryam, medical doctor
  • 'Dr Irwan has an amazing talent in making learning English easy'

Ibrahim, analyst in Politics, Security & Economy
  • 'Indeed [I thought doing] presentation is a basic knowledge, but when [I] attended this [training], it’s widen[ed] my view and [I] understand deeper into the communication skills.'

    Akmal, property agent
  • 'Before learning with Dr Irwan, I was unsure of whether or not I would understand and apply his course to my future. Now, with the way he explains a difficult course with such ease, I believe that I have acquired a new skill thanks to him.'

    Dhaanieyaa, journalist
  • '...I had trouble arranging my thoughts before speaking them into sentences, hence making it difficult to explain what i have been thinking. After seeing Dr Irwan in class being so smooth and effective with his words, I observed and tried to imitate him, and now I already have a figure to imagine [as an example] everytime i wanna speak my thoughts. I think that has significantly improved my ability to project my thoughts to other people.'

Training built around the work your team actually does

I start with the situations where your team needs to communicate well, then build the training around them.

The questionnaire and discussion give me context to understand what your team needs before we begin the training.

Discuss training for your team

I learn your complex ideas, and then help you find the English for those ideas

  1. Science and philosophy background

My PhD is in Immunology and Microbiology, and I also have formal philosophy training in Islamic Thought and Civilisation.

When your team is trying to explain something technical or abstract, I can follow the thinking before we start working on the English.

  2. I know how to teach difficult things

My university students voted me Best Lecturer in the Teaching Category, and I'm both a certified and accredited trainer under HRD Corp Malaysia.

With over 10 years of university-level teaching experience, I've learned how to make difficult material easier to understand and practise.

  3. I only learned to speak English as an adult

I didn't grow up speaking English and was bad at it. I started learning English seriously only in my late 20s while living in Australia. I then became part of an English-speaking family from the UK, which has given me years of immersion in how English is actually spoken.

So I know how to guide you to fluency, even if you didn't grow up speaking English.

Tell me where communication gets difficult for your team

You don't need to decide what training you need in advance. Start with the questionnaire and tell me a little about your team and where communication becomes challenging.

I'll help you work out what would be most useful to focus on.
